Carnatic Compositions

For the last three days I've been listening to different renditions of Smt. M S Subbulakshmi (with Radha Viswanathan) and it's been nothing short of an ecstatic musical experience. I picked up the following tracks from itunes :
  • Rama Nannu Brovara
  • Amba Madura &
  • Kaligiyunte
Each one is a masterpiece. Although I am an avid listener of Hindustani vocal (khyals and ragas), I have found Carnatic to be as complex, lilting and enjoyable. If you haven't paid much attention to Indian Classical, believe me it's a must. The compositions are very complex and carrying the variations, the nuances while maintaining the taal is an endeavor.

Dear Gautam

It is very true that Carnatic music is a complex and a beautiful system of classical music.I also believe that the essence of carnatic music is to reach the god thru "Nada" or Sound and is not a mere art for aural pleasure .

When krithis are rendered with devotion by artists like M.S.S , the divine qualities of the music will be reveales even to an average listener.

I couldn't agree more krishna! It is a divine connection, especially the lyrical content which tends to express beauty, grace and divinity of our hindu Gods.
